Imagine BootX
Friday, 26 October 2007
Firstly I apologise for the lack of posts! Being wrapped up in work, job interviews, owning stupid a stupid dog and Leopard fever have meant RW has been a little neglected :-/
So...lets quickly talk about ImagineBootX, It allows you to change the Mac OS X boot screen. As you will already have gathered I like to customise my OS, I like it to feel like it’s mine, and that it has my own little tweaks, some of them purely cosmetic, some of them very functional as well. ImagineBootX falls in to the former catagory, nothing but mindless posing...
A little background, BootX is the loader that gets your PowerPC based Mac from Open Firmware (Apple equivalent to the PC Bios) to the Operating System. In the good old days it showed the ‘Happy Mac’ face, and since 10.2 has shown the Apple logo and a spinner. You can hack the BootX files to replace these images with anything you like but it’s not the easiest of processes, as I found out!
I then stumbled across this little program that allows you to drag and drop, in a very Mac-like way any image you like and click save to edit the BootX screen, very simple, it just works.
Give it a go, it accepts loads of image formats so you can change it to almost anything you can find pics of!
Another piece of (useless) eye candy that makes my Mac feel a little bit more mine!
For those of you using PPC based Macs ImagineBootX is a handy way to customize your start screen.
